Your Questions About Honest Kitchen

Helen asks…
Is The Honest Kitchen good dog food? Is it complete?
Does it have enough vitamins? I am wondering because unlike kibble, it doesn’t have glucosamine and chondroitin, it doesn’t have prebitoics or probiotics. I can add these things but am wondering if it is still a good food? I add meat to it. My dog seems to be doing well. But still am just wanting to make sure.

The ingredient seems of very high quality indeed, all no GM, no added crap, no low quality filler, all organic etc etc.
This is something worth looking at although just one thing strung to mind….there is only one animal product (being only one meat source) no mention of bone, fish (or fish oil) or liver…
If I were to feed my dog this I’d defiantly add a bit more raw meat, maybe a few eggs a week, a fish or 2 a week (or wild salmon oil supplement) , a very small amount of liver (5% of the total) and some raw butchers bones to chew…. Other wise I’d feel there would be some nutrients missing.

Honest Kitchen is really honest!?
The following is on the Honest Kitchen website I have been useing honest kitchen off and on for about a year (I also use nature’s variety and urban wolf) and we have loved it. Now I love it even more. What do you guys think?
From their site:
(Please note, if you are involved in ‘mass breeding’ or operate a puppy mill or other large scale facility that produces or markets animals to be sold via a retail store or web site, please do not contact us. You will not meet the Honest Kitchen’s requirements for representing or selling our products. We work with ethical, responsible breeders and pet supply stores/ distributors, only).
I don’t know if it is in Canada but it does have a counter part under the names Urban Wolf and Essex cottage. Check them out they are wonderful!

admin answers:
Nice! Good for them, that takes a lot of guts for a company to take a stand like that. Its a pretty smart move on their part, they will most definitely expand their market share with responsible breeders and pet owners, I’m sure. I’ve actually never heard of this brand.. Wonder if its available in Canada?
Steven asks…
Honest Kitchen For LARGE Dogs?
I currently feed a partial raw, partial kibble. (I feed one raw meal and one kibble meal a day- I know about the difference in times it takes to digest) I have a Great Dane who is still growing- he is 16 months right now.
I’ve looked into the Honest Kitchen food and like what I see… but I am concerned about the overall cost. I would be mixing in extra meat and RMBs, but still… $70 a month for dog food, plus the cost of raw meat is a bit much for me- part time job only, college student.
But then again… the food is human grade, quality food and properly balanced nutrition-wise. I would probably get the ‘Perfect Form’ supplement as well, since my boy tends to have bad gas and loose stools no matter what I feed him.
Is there anyone out there that feeds their dogs Honest Kitchen? Preferably, dog owners with large dogs, I would like to hear your opinions on the food.
Thanks!
Well, actually Honest Kitchen recomends adding extras- raw meat does not unbalance the food. Think about it, dogs are carnivores. They are not omnivores, they are meant to eat pure meat.

admin answers:
Actually – dogs are what is referred to as opportunistic carnivorous scavengers.
In comparison to herbivores their digestive tracts are not efficient at breaking down unprocessed grain nor can they break down the cell walls in vegetables very effectively. They need most vegetables and some grains to be ‘predigested’ – and that can be done by lightly steaming the vegetables – or adding certain enzymes to their food.
So , they are not true carnivores – nor are they omnivores (cats interestingly are true obligate carnivores). Dogs lack the digestive tract, teeth and enzymes to be true omnivores.
Feeding a diet made to be fed with raw food will ensure that there are no issues with ‘unbalancing nutrients’. Also, if you are taking the time to research your food (and it sounds like you are) – then you know exactly what nutrients your dog needs, and what he is getting.
Now – Honest Kitchen is a good food – and you can add raw to it. Another food you can look into that is made to be paired with raw is Timberwolf Organics ‘Black Forest’ – I think it’s a little less expense the ‘FORCE’ – which is Honest Kitchen’s brand. (My boxer won’t touch FORCE for some reason – but ADORES Timberwolf Oraganics)
I personally feed a mix of Timberwolf Organics and a home made diet. I choose to do this because I KNOW her food meets at least the minimum requirements – and I can boost her nutrients where I *know* she needs the extra help. For instance, at 2 1/2 years old Kira (my boxer) has already had a TPLO (surgery that puts a metal plate in her knee) and she has 3 problems with the vertebra in her lower spine. Boxer are also rather gasy – and predisposed to heart problems and cancer – knowing these things makes it so I can sit down and draw up a diet that will help protect her heart and joints.
Now – for you, what this boils down to is – you should feed the best food that you can afford, realizing that while in college you might not be able to afford certain foods.
You may also want to look into the Whole Dog Journal – once a year they publish an article that lists what they believe to be the best dog foods on the market.

Sandy asks…
Anyone’s dog on the Honest Kitchen food? Wondering if it’s healthy enough? Also is it tasty for the dog?
My little monkey is sooo picky! He only likes one kibble. And he eats it in the evening when he’s hungry. It’s Orijen. He will only eat the one kind, not the fish one. I have tried him on RAW, he doesn’t like it, Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Halo. All kinds and he won’t eat any other kibble but Orijen. But I know that his breed is prone to allergies and feeding the one kind forever is not good. So I wanted to try The Honest Kitchen. Wondering if anyone feeds it to their dogs and if it’s healthy enough. www.thehonestkitchen.com
Thank you so much for your help if you can answer!
Lol. that was a funny answer Dogzzz. You may be right. I checked out that website. But I still do want to make sure he gets the best food possible. He’s a cute little monkey and I love him!

admin answers:
I took a look at their website. It doesn’t look bad and it is good that it doesn’t contain grains, but it doesn’t compare to the quality of Orijen. Orijen has much more meat content which is what dogs need. The Honest Kitchen meat source is weighed prior to dehyrdation so is probably not the true first ingredient since it is not listed in meal form. I think Orijen will keep her coat shinier and in much better condition because of the salmon and high meat content.
While I think the Honest Kitchen is not bad, I think if you start feeding her wet food she may stop eating the Orijen which is better. The dry kibble is also much better for her teeth.
As far as developing allergies by only feeding Orijen, I wouldn’t be concerned because for one it is grainless which is the biggest source of allergies and second because even the protein source is well diversified with many different forms in the food.
