The first step is to prepare a business plan. Even if you will not be applying for a bank loan, a business plan helps you to think through your business – what it needs, who it will benefit, how much it will cost, and what is its potential. Here are free business plans on childcare business that you may want to look into:

It is also important that you learn the tax rules affecting daycare centers, especially if you are going to open one from your home. Here is the IRS page on child care centers: http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/industries/content/0,,id=99878,00.html
As for the licenses and requirements in your state, the Administration for Children and Families provide a state by state listing of contacts for licensing and regulations governing child care businesses:

Michael asks…
What is your experience or opinion of home child care?
I am looking to place my 2 year old and 3 month old in a home daycare. I like the daycare my 2 year old is in but I think maybe the 1 on 1 contact of a home daycare might be better. Of course I would have to find one I can really conect with and be as close as family with. I have a list of about 20 licsened home daycares in my area that I have to start interveiwing.

I put my oldest daughter in an at-home day care from 5 1/2 months through 2 1/2 years old. It was wonderful because I knew that she was getting the attention she needed. You need to make sure that the day care isn’t going to take lots of kids or another baby, which would impact the amount of time she could spend taking care of your littlest one. It was good for our family. I would just caution you to question all of them on how many kids they take in as well as the ages. Also ask if they plan on driving or if they have visitors during the day. My day care provider’s mother would come over occasionally and visit, which I didn’t have a problem with, but if it had been a brother or dad or uncle, I don’t know. Also, make sure that they have an OPEN DOOR policy. You should be able to drop in early, unannounced, whenever you want. If they don’t agree to this, then do not sign anything! Good luck!!!

Betty asks…
Anyone know the site for becoming an army (home) child care provider in Europe?
I live in Germany. I’m a mother of two and I love children. It makes more sense to work with children while taking care of my own than, to do a job that i don’t like while paying someone else for child care. If you have any tips on the child care provider program PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

Go down to the Child Development Center [CDC] on post. They have a class that lasts two weeks in order to be a in home day care provider. They normally need many of them. It is very tough at times because you have to put in classroom plans, have excruciating inspections, and write about each child’s advancements every week. If you need to find out more look online at your post’s website. You can find that by adding your post’s name then army.mil. [Example: www.kaiserslautern.army.mil] Look under ‘Newcomers Guide.’ It will point you in the right direction.
Good Luck!

Chris asks…
How much for home child care?
How much would be a reasonable amount to charge for me watching a 15 month old in my home? I am not related to or friends with this person. I am providing meals and snacks but not diapers, wipes, etc. I live in Michigan where a licensed daycare charges about $5.00 per hour. Thanks.
No, it is actually less than daycare, lol. Geez.

Olivia
$ 5.00 X 8 = $ 40
May be around 50 to 60 a day in Michigan or In the USA.
In Vietnam $ 600/month for foreign, and 600,000 VN piastes /month.
I guess so.
